Geographic differences in adaptive responses of the European common frog (Rana temporaria) populations to the local thermal environments

My project is focused on the adaptive potential and phenotypic plasticity of the European common frog (Rana temporaria) populations from central (Steigerwald, Germany) and southern (Zagreb, Croatia) parts of distribution range, in an answer to the local thermal conditions. All physiological functions of ectotherms are dependent on environmental temperature, and physiological adaptations to thermal environments are important to achieve optimal performance levels and, thus, maximize fitness. Rana temporaria is widely distributed across Europe, inhabiting variety of habitats differing in thermal conditions, which makes it an excellent model for investigation of local thermal adaptation. My aim is to study how adjustments of different traits, including e.g. morphology, body condition, jumping performance or preferred temperatures, contribute to the local physiological adaptation of R. temporaria populations from thermally differing habitats.
